Three AM. Police

Generally speaking, I’m not interested in anyone at three AM. Publisher’s Clearing House doesn’t deliver those big checks in the middle of the night. Anybody around at three AM will come back later if you just ignore them.

So when I wake up because someone’s knocking on the door at three AM, I roll over and wait for them to go away. But there’s a second, more emphatic knock and a call, “Police.”

I decide to make an exception to my rule, but since talking to the police in the nude is, at best, demeaning, I answer back with, “Just a minute, lemme get some clothes on.” They respond in silence.

I stumble around in the dark and, finally, struggle into some jeans. I go to the door and, no lie, it is the police. Three officers so, whatever it is, They’re serious about it, flashing flashlights all over the place.

“Is Jose <not his real name> here?” one officer asks.

“Jose Garcia <still not his real name>?” I ask.

     “Yes, is he here?”

“No, I threw him out a coupla weeks ago.” I reply.

     “Why?”

“He never made payments on time and in full.”

Pause. Flashlights continue flashing. “Can we come in and look around?” an officer asks. On Constitutional grounds I can tell them no, but this would make the whole thing oppositional and being oppositional with the police is non-productive.

“Sure,” I say and step inside. They come in and look all around the house. While they’re doing this I ask the one who’s job it is to watch me, “What happened?”

“He beat up his girlfriend,” he says. Then, after a pause, “Pretty bad.” When the police say it’s pretty bad, it’s pretty bad.

One officer comes back from the kitchen and says, “There’s a back door,” but I can tell they’re not interested in me anymore, which is just fine with me.

They leave, asking me to contact them if I see him. I say I will and I mean it.

They leave, I go back to bed and am out in one minute.

The next day I search around the net and found the story in multiple newspapers. The headline in one was:

“Witness, Woman and 6 Month Old Child Apparently battered by Post Release Offender in Ventura”

The child was taken to Children’s Hospital in LA.

So I was lucky to get him outta my house.

Cruise on over to Amazon.com and get a copy of “Closing Night, Thank God”.
